Triassic of Algarve (Portugal)
The Triassic of Algarve yielded fascinating discoveries. Prehistoric amphibians, phytosaurs and other creatures inhabited what is now the southern-most part of Portugal.
Metoposaurus algarvensis, a salamander-like creature, had an unusual appearance. The amphibian was "as long as a small car and had hundreds of sharp teeth in its big flat head, which kind of looks like a toilet seat when the jaws snap shut", according to the words of Dr Steve Brusatte (lead author of the study). With such a guise, it is no wonder that Metoposaurus became an internet sensation in 2015. The illustration featured in several news media such as Science Magazine, The Guardian and the BBC.
